NEW NEW YORK GOVERNOR HAS AFFAIRS TOO… JUST NOT WITH A HOOKER

Original posting at 7:27 a.m. ET: N.Y. Gov. David Paterson, who took over the state’s top job yesterday after Democrat Eliot Spitzer officially resigned amid a prostitution scandal, has told the Daily News that he and his wife, Michelle, had affairs during a rough patch in their marriage several years ago.Over the course of several interviews, Paterson tells the Daily News that he maintained a relationship with another woman from 1999 until 2001. He and his wife eventually sought counseling and repaired their relationship, he tells the newspaper.
Paterson rose from the lieutenant governor’s office after Spitzer resigned amid last week’s allegations that he hired a call girl from a high-priced escort service. After his inauguration Monday, Paterson and his wife acknowledged the relationships but did not go into details.
“This was a marriage that appeared to be going sour at one point,” Paterson told the newspaper in an interview Saturday. “But I went to counseling, and we decided we wanted to make it work.”
“Like most marriages, you go through certain difficult periods,” Michelle Paterson told the Daily News on Monday.
The New York Post says Paterson will discuss the revelations during a news conference later today.
Update at 10:48 a.m. ET: Our colleagues at Gannett News Service say Paterson will meet the press at noon.
Update at 1:15 p.m. ET: Paterson just told reporters that he has had several extramarital affairs since 1999. He says one of the women works for state government.
“I do not feel I have broken my commitment to the people of New York state,” Paterson says.
Paterson and his wife, Michelle, “stood before reporters and answered numerous questions about the new governor’s affairs,” according to the Associated Press.
Update at 1:21 p.m. ET: The New York Times reports that Paterson “had affairs with several women, including women who were on the state payroll.”
The new governor says he didn’t break any laws. He wasn’t very specific about the number of women or the duration of the affairs.
“Several years ago and there were a number of women. When I became aware of something, I was pretty upset and I was kind of just angry and for a period of time I was using poor judgment,” he says, according to the Times. “I wasn’t reckless. I was jealous over Michelle but it was not Michelle’s fault.”
Update at 1:30 p.m. ET: Paterson says he came forward because he didn’t want to be blackmailed.
“I betrayed a commitment to my wife several years ago. I do not feel I betrayed my commitment to the citizens of New York state,” Paterson says, according to Gannett News Service. “I haven’t broken any laws. I don’t think I violated my oath of office. I saw this as a private matter, but both of us have committed acts of infidelity.”
