ARSONIST ON FIRE

By Fayner | March 22, 2008

SEATTLE — Police and fire investigators are looking for two young men suspected of setting fire to a locksmith shop in West Seattle early Friday morning.

Fire Department Lt. Harold Webb said the Puget Sound Key & Lock business was filled with flames when firefighters arrived about 3:30 a.m.

Crews quickly got the fire under control and residents in the apartments on the second floor got out safely.

Investigators believe the fire was set with an accelerant in a bottle, and owner Michael Dein said he couldn’t think of anyone who would want to damage his business.

“This is West Seattle this is not supposed to happen here,” he said angrily. “This is not Grand Theft Auto. Why are people running around throwing Molotov cocktails?”

Neighbors told police they heard a “whooshing” sound before the flames raced through the business, and said they saw two men running from the area, one of whom was on fire.

Officers and police dogs have been searching the area around the locksmith shop in the 6000 block of California Avenue Southwest, but so far no arrests have been made.

Police spokesman Mark Jamieson said detectives believe the two men may have been burned while setting the fire, and asked anyone with information to call police.

Dein is now trying to figure out what to do next.

“That was my entire life,” he said. “And now it’s gone.”
